Wind Turbine Generator Grounding: An IEC 61400-24 Perspective

A wind turbine is essentially a 150-m lightning rod. Grounding faults in WTGs are one of the top causes of unplanned downtime.

LPZ Concept

Divide the WTG into Lightning Protection Zones (LPZ 0A → LPZ 3). Each transition boundary needs surge protection devices (SPDs).

Foundation Ring Electrode

Bond the tower base to a horizontal ring electrode 1 m below grade, min 50 mm² Cu. Target resistance ≤ 10 Ω.

Mesh vs. Radial

For rocky terrain (ρ > 500 Ω·m), use extended mesh with vertical rods at wind farm collector substation.
